Getting It Booked In
We run out of Santa Monica, and South Gate is about 18 miles from the shop. That's a real drive, not a same-day guarantee, so when you call we're scheduling a window, not promising we can drop everything and show up in an hour. Tell us the door's age if you know it, whether it's binding on one side or dragging across the whole track, and whether the opener is still trying to run it - that tells us a lot before the truck ever leaves.
If the door came with the house and you don't know the year, a rough guess still helps. Given how much of South Gate's stock dates to the early 1950s, chances are decent we already know what track gauge and roller stem we're dealing with before we ask a second question.
How We Fix It
First we check the track alignment, because on a door this old, rollers rarely fail on their own - they fail because the track's out of square and every roller's been fighting it for years. If the track's bent, we straighten or replace the section before touching the rollers, otherwise new rollers just wear out the same way.
Then we pull the old steel rollers and stems and swap in new ones sized to the original narrow-gauge track. Sealed nylon rollers are available and run quieter, but they cost more, and on a lot of these older doors the steel stem itself needs replacing anyway - the axle end is usually the part that's actually failed, not the wheel.
We check every roller on the door while we're in there, not just the one that broke. If one's gone, the rest are close, and coming back for a second roller two months later costs the homeowner a second trip charge for a job that could've been one visit.
Time on the Job
A straightforward roller swap - no bent track, no opener issue - is usually a single-visit job. Once we've got the door open and the track exposed, most of the time goes into checking every roller and stem, not just replacing the one that failed.
If the track's bent from a seized roller, that adds time, because we're straightening or swapping a section before any new roller goes in. And if it turns out the opener's been fighting a binding door for a while, we'll flag that separately - that's a different repair, not part of a roller job, and we won't fold it into the same estimate without telling you first.
What Is on the Truck
Because so much of South Gate's housing dates to the early 1950s, the truck carries steel rollers and stems sized for narrower, older track gauges, not just the wider modern standard. That's a deliberate stock choice for this part of the route - showing up with only the newer size means a second trip on half the jobs out here.
We also carry sealed nylon rollers for anyone who wants the upgrade, replacement stems, and enough track stock to straighten a short bent section on the spot. What we don't carry is full replacement track for every possible door width - if a track's badly bent or the door itself is failing along with the rollers, that's a follow-up estimate, not something we improvise from the truck.
